Smoking Links To Baby’s Respiratory Illness
Studies show that babies who were born to mothers who smoke are with relatively smaller airways compared to those whose mothers do not. This makes the baby susceptible to breathing problems upon birth. It also shows that Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is most likely to happen to these babies. Smoking has shown to have something to do with several problems among babies, counting premature birth and low birth weight.
Mothers who smoke have a higher risk of miscarriage, stillbirth or giving birth to a premature infant. Smoking increases the baby’s heart rate, which is caused by low oxygen supply in his respiratory system. It will affect a growing baby’s health in many ways. It might result to more problems as he grows. These factors can also cause sudden death because it decreases the child’s ability to breathe. He will also find it hard to sleep and rest because of this.
Babies with mothers who smoke are born with less weight. Once exposed to smoke upon being conceived, a baby is most likely to live a very different life from that of a normal and healthy child. It makes him vulnerable to diseases especially those which are linked to our respiratory system. Furthermore, it might lead to infections and more serious health diseases that you don’t want your child to have. It will make your baby feel restless and he will find it hard to sleep whenever he needs to. This will also affect you in many ways as your baby will experience more illnesses compared to normal children.
The more cigarettes a baby is exposed to everyday, the more health risks he is likely to face. It is best to keep your baby away from anyone who smokes or anywhere near a smoking area. While early, you should be aware of the harmful things that this might bring to your child. The number of cigarettes a baby is exposed to everyday reduces his chances of a healthier life. The length of exposure to smoke and how much smoke a baby inhales everyday increases the risk of SIDS.
Keep your baby away from people who smoke. If you are a mother and you smoke, do not do it anywhere near the child, or better yet, stop doing it for your baby’s safety. A single smoke can seem harmless, but with a baby around, you will never know how much harm this can bring him. Keep your house smoke-free. Keep the environment that he is in as clean as you can make it.
As much as possible, think of what a seemingly harmless cigarette might bring your baby. Quit now before you regret it in the end. You do not want to do anything that will harm an innocent child. Your baby will surely be thankful and he will have a better life. Knowing that your baby is not at risk of SIDS and that your baby is breathing clean air with each breath he takes at night will make things a whole lot better for you.
